Pulmonology Philosophy and Goals
The
Section of Pediatric Pulmonology has a strong commitment to the
training of academic pediatric pulmonary specialists. Clinically,
we emphasize excellent care of the whole child and his family,
whether the child is acutely or gravely ill as in the Intensive
Care Unit or whether he is chronically ill. Academically, we wish
to graduate those who are skilled educators, who seek new
knowledge and who can teach others to do the same. Research of all
types is essential to this approach and is fostered in an
environment of honest questioning and collaboration.
The fellowship program consists
of a three year curriculum to enable comprehensive training in
Pediatric Pulmonology the major areas of focus in the fellowship
training program are:
- 1) a broad clinical experience
in pediatric pulmonology, including critical care.
- 2) exposure to both clinical
research trials and basic science research, including
instruction in abstract, manuscript and grant preparation.
- 3) didactic and clinical
training in methods of education of medical students, house
staff
and practitioners.
- 4) program development to
enhance the care of patients with chronic respiratory diseases
and cystic fibrosis.
For
the first year of the fellowship, the general goals are
acquisition of the basic clinical skills and background knowledge
of pediatric pulmonology and identification of an area of basic or
clinical science where the resident wants to focus his/her
research efforts. In the second year the fellow is expected to
have sufficient knowledge of pulmonology to assume increasing
independence, continue a focused research effort, and begin to
identify areas where new knowledge in pulmonology is needed. The
third year of fellowship is one of increased independence,
consolidation of scholarship efforts by completing a manuscript or
grant application for submission, and development of skills in
administration and personnel management necessary to run an
effective program.
