Background
The Program was created to identify, support, and develop pediatrics residents and fellows with commitment to a career as a pediatric researcher, physician-scientist, and future academic leader. Our residency and fellowship programs offer comprehensive, balanced training in primary care and specialty care with many different opportunities. However, we recognize that to be successful in academics, additional resources and mentorship are often needed. Thus, we have developed this enrichment program in multiple different areas of research and academics to allow committed individuals to pursue their interests. Summary
Students and residents will commit to the program early in residency and receive additional support for research in terms of seminars, mentorship, and meeting funds. Resident scholars who continue as fellows at IU (Green Fellows) will receive a stipend supplement and additional resources. Residents may also choose to pursue training at other institutions for fellowship, and we expect that Scholars will be highly competitive for any position in the country.

Whom is the Program targeting?
Pediatrics residents with a clear commitment to academic medicine. Exceptional students and residency applicants will be identified and invited to participate, and/or interested students may request information during interview and residency application process.
What credentials are necessary?
We want the program to be broad and inclusive - no specific criteria, degree, or number of publications are required. We are recruiting students with PhD, MPH, or equivalent background. However, we also hope to stimulate interest and commitment among residents excited by a future in academics who will develop new skills.
What is the Goal?
Our goal is to broaden the current program to stimulate interest in research careers, provide more formal academic mentorship and career information early in residency for those still developing their interests and skills.
What is the Program Outcome?
We expect that many Scholars will pursue fellowships or academic careers at IU or at top programs around the world. Past participants have been very successful in fellowship matching, grant funding, and academic careers.
How does this Program differ from the regular residency?
This is not a separate program, but a track to enhance academic opportunities. Our residency provides a broad education in general and specialty pediatrics for all residents. We pride ourselves on a balanced curriculum, and we offer flexibility in scheduling selectives and electives based on career interests. It is important to note that we support all residents in their career and research pursuits. Many residents will go on to be successful in fellowships and academic careers without participating in this program during residency.

How can I apply?
Residency applicants will apply through the regular ERAS Pediatric program application. Qualified students who are identified during the application/interview process will be accepted into the Scholars program if they match at IU. We accept 2-3 residents per year with 6-8 total during residency and additional fellows to have a good group dynamic and cohort.
Can I enter the program later in residency?
Some residents are selected to enter the program later in residency, on a competitive basis. However, the goal is to integrate research and scholarly work early in your residency.
What are the requirements/expectations?
80% attendance at research meetings, mentorship meetings quarterly, research elective(s) in PL2 year, present Senior Project/Research Day poster in PL3 year, and travel to an academic meeting PL3 year.

How does the Program change for Fellows?
Fellows Program provides:
- Continuity of academic pathway with program integrated from residency to fellowship at IU; ongoing research mentorship
- Monthly educational research meetings, annual Retreat
- Additional $12,500 annual salary and educational fund stipend
- Opportunities to participate in NIH T32 Grant, NIH Loan Repayment, and other grant programs for salary support/loan forbearance
- Expectation that fellows who successfully complete the Green program will have an opportunity to continue an academic career at IU in a faculty position
About Dr. Green
Morris Green, M.D. nurtured and served Riley Hospital for Children and the community as Chairman of Pediatrics from 1967 through 1987. He is currently the Director of the Section of Behavioral Pediatrics. He is a prolific writer, including journal articles, textbooks and Editor duties for the Bright Futures Guidelines for Health Supervision. He is an honored member of the national pediatric community, as recipient of numerous awards including the AMA Abraham Jacobi Award, the APA Lifetime Achievement Award, the FPO Joseph St. Geme Award, the AAP Ross Award for Pediatric Education and C. Anderson Aldrich Award in Child Development. He meets every resident, we are proud that he is a vital member of the teaching faculty at the IUSOM.
