Combined Programs

Combined programs in Pediatrics have been a part of our residencies for over 25 years. Combined programs are a benefit to the categorical program residents by enhancing different training, additional perspectives, and educational collaboration that make these combinations a vital part of Pediatrics which are fully integrated.

Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics Program

Gilbert Liu, MD, MS meets with a patient Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics Residents

The combined five-year residency program in Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics was opened in 1991. One of three programs in the country, Indiana University offers two positions in Emergency Medicine/Pediatrics each year. The program prepares residents for board certification in both disciplines. Residents integrate their pediatric rotations within all three hospitals, participating as equal peers with their fellow pediatric residents. The residents have a pediatric continuity practice and alternate rotations between pediatrics and emergency medicine every two months. Residents receive 30 months of training in each field. With an excellent patient base and experienced faculty who enjoy teaching, residents progress through increasingly supervisory roles to become competent in the management of problems in both pediatrics and emergency medicine. Future career possibilities include academic appointments available in virtually any combination of the two fields for physicians interested in teaching, or one can join a private pediatric practice or community emergency medicine group.
